Making music together with other people is certainly an exciting activity. Considering our experience and knowledge, which have kept the “Bruskers Guitar Duo” alive and constantly developing in the last years, we wanted to write down a number of rules and suggestions in order to give everybody the possibility to explore the world of ensemble music in an exciting way, starting from the easiest guitar ensemble you can think of: the guitar duo. Playing in a duo is definitely a unique experience. It’s quite different form playing a solo guitar, which means a single instrument has to provide for every single element of the piece, and also from playing in a three or more elements ensemble, for which – no matter what instruments are involved – melody, accompaniment and rhythm are treated separately and the different sections play respectively high, middle or low registers. In a guitar duo instead, there isn’t any clear distinction between the sections as the rules are particularly flexible. This is probably the reason why a guitar duo can be considered the joining link between the solo and the ensemble approach.

“Una Chitarra per … Duo” is a series of three handbooks of increasing difficulty which aims at exploring and analyzing the features of playing in a guitar duo. Before playing a piece with two guitars you’ll have to analyze it and study its details in order each of the two musicians not to struggle in the process of ordering his / her own and personal ideas. This happens because rhythm, melody and accompaniment can sometimes coexist in one single section. For that reason and not to run into the idea that “I play the melody – you play the chords” you’ll need to find a balance among work, knowledge and synergy: these elements will make your interpretations interesting and original. In the three handbooks we’ll describe and analyze many of the possible ways of playing a piece with two guitars, supporting our advice with several technical and musical ideas.

In writing these three books we didn’t want to create a “method” in an academic sense, but much more a “notebook”, which can be used by a student as well as by non-professional players. Theory is expressed in a discursive way and supported by examples and by some of our original compositions, with pre-playing technical exercises complete with tablature and videos. Moreover we’ll introduce some traditional jazz standards revised following our very personal point of view and with the aim of putting in practice what we’d previously explained.

Beside being “notebook” the three books are also intended for teachers, who can use them as a collection of repertoire pieces: they can be useful in training some technical features as arpeggios, rhythm patterns and percussions. Moreover some compositions contain written improvisation, which can be easily substituted from the students’ one, facing the fascinating world of improvisation.
